Manny Pacquiao: Best Pound for Pound Boxer

I was really excited about this fight! I really didn't know who was going to win between the two. They are both really good fighters but I was really aiming for Manny Pacquiao to win. It was disappointing to see the fight end so early. Reporting from Las Vegas -- On a stunning Saturday night in Las Vegas, you could almost hear the 90 million people on those Pacific Islands thousands of miles to the West, screaming in delight.Their guy, Manny Pacquiao, the pride of the Philippines, had just beaten Oscar De La Hoya. Not just beaten him, destroyed him. Humiliated him. Sent him into retirement. Pacquiao's victory had ended an era in boxing that spanned more than 10 years and was the personal domain of a great boxer known as the Golden Boy.

No mas.

After eight rounds of taking a barrage of punches from the stocky, supposedly undersized Pacquiao, De La Hoya walked across the ring to Pacquiao. But not to box. To congratulate Pacquiao on being the better man, the better fighter, the new No. 1 kid on the block.

De La Hoya then told Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, who had predicted all this, "You were right, Freddie. I don't have it anymore."

Seldom has a retirement been announced so dramatically, nor correctly, although De La Hoya may fudge for a week or so.

It went down officially as an eighth-round technical knockout. Roach, who had trained De La Hoya a year and a half ago in his split-decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in this same MGM Grand ring, had predicted Pacquiao would take out De La Hoya in the ninth round.

"The only surprise in this one," Pacquiao said, "was that my trainer picked the round."

Roach had called a lot more than this. Among other things, he had said that De La Hoya could no longer "pull the trigger." In this one, the Golden Boy seldom even got the gun cocked.

De La Hoya was favored by most boxing experts based on the fact that his body frame was an estimated 20% bigger than Pacquiao's. Those experts apparently didn't factor in the size of Pacquiao's heart, nor the length of De La Hoya's tooth.

Don't forget the STRENGTH training!

A few months ago I was lucky enough to take a pilates class and a nutrition course at the same time. Why is this lucky? Because I was able to surround myself and become educated with all aspects of health. Not only the physical but the inner aspects as well, such as the consumption of nutrients and vitamins. My nutrition professor was a triathelete so she was a hard-core health fanatic. Some things she emphasize was the importance of not only doing cardio exercises, but also strength training and flexibilty exercises.

This was a huge enlightment to me. I've always only considered the importance of cardio exercises, the treadmill, the running. I mean, that's what I've always been taught, "It is good to run. It's good for your heart." I guess everyone was so busy emphasizing the importance of cardio that the other aspects of fitness were inevitably left out. Accirding to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, "Despite the proven benefits of strength training, many women do not lift weights for the fear of developing large muscles and gaining weight."

Strength training works your muscles and increases your muscle strength. Increasing your muscle strength will help you perfrom daily tasks easier, such as opening a jar or lifting the end of a sofa to vacuum. Not only does strength training increase muscle strength. As you age, your chances of falling and breaking a bone drastically increases. The Pennsylvania Department of Health also states that strength training has has been effective in increasing bone density and strengthening tendons and ligaments.

As I've said in other blogs, balance is KEY. Yes, cardio is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. BUT, there are other crucial aspects as well. STRENGTH TRAINING being one of them. It's easy to incorporate strength training into your life without developing hugh bulging muscles. The Pensylvannia Department of Health advises to ust do about 8-12 repitions in sets of 3. Or you can consult a professional trainer for advice on strength training. The important things is to just get started!

Supporting the Troops

Whether you're against the war or for it, there should be no question if you should support our troops. Many have given their lives for the call of duty and many return home injured physically and/or emotionally from the horrors of war. I often change the channel when news of the violence from the war comes on. It's not because I don't find it interesting or that I think it doesn't concern me, I change it because it saddens me. The soldiers are out there fighting for a cause bigger than themselves. I wish I could do more than send out prayers to support our troops.

Fortunately, there are those out there making big strides to help our Veterans. Homes for Our Trooops is a non-profit organization who finds volunteers to build homes for wounded veterans. David Battle never knew he would return home from war with both legs and one arm gone forever. After coming home to his wife and four children on Christmas day, having been living in a room at a community home for hospitalized veterans for a year. They are more than deserving of a place to call home.

Thanks to Home for Our Troops, which was started by John Gonsalves in 2003, Battles and his family will be able to move to a four bedroom home in Pasadena sometime next year. Homes for our Troops have built 33 homes and have 19 in progress in 24 states. "There's nothing else I would rather do than what I'm doing now," Gonsalves said. "After Sept. 11, there was a void in my life of, you know, 'What am I doing for my country?'"

14-2 Lakers

I was very devastated when I was watching this game last night. Indiana had it very lucky. Although the Pacers beat Celtics, I'm pissed because Lakers were on a huge roll! It was that last second they were playing like hot potatoe! and bam that ball went in the Pacer's basket. I still get mad just thinking about it. They won by one point! It's pretty much true that Lakers left their defense at home. I'm just so mad that was such a lucky shot! The Lakers became unglued in the fourth quarter and lost to the Indiana Pacers, 118-117, on a last-second tip-in by forward Troy Murphy that sent Conseco Fieldhouse into a Tuesday night tizzy.

Long before the Lakers felt a postgame chill while boarding the team bus, they were abandoned by their source of inspiration this season, a defense ranked among the league leaders in virtually every statistical category.

Inspiration turned to desperation as the Pacers (7-10) picked them apart with several drives to the basket on the way to overcoming a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

Add to it an updated version of Murphy's Law -- let a bad team stick around long enough, and bad things will happen.

Pacers guard Marquis Daniels airballed a wild reverse layup attempt with 1.9 seconds left, but Murphy was there for a left-handed tap that pranced around the rim before falling into the hoop as time ran out.

Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said the play was "fortuitous." Pacers Coach Jim O'Brien called it "special . . . a great, great feeling for everyone who is a Pacer." Kobe Bryant simply hoped the ball would have fallen through more cleanly to allow some sort of a Lakers rebuttal.

Whatever the perspective, the Lakers (14-2) failed to keep pace with the franchise-best 16-1 start of the 2001-02 team. Instead, they fell to a Pacers team that had lost five of its last six.

It certainly looked good for the Lakers after Trevor Ariza and Jordan Farmar sparked a 17-0 run in the last 2:28 of the third quarter to provide a 101-86 advantage. The lead swelled briefly to 16 before the Pacers came rumbling back.

The Lakers posted 30-36-35 across the first three quarters, but were outscored in the fourth, 32-16. The Pacers banged through their interior for a surprising six offensive rebounds in the quarter, none more important than Murphy's tap, his 17th rebound.

"That's what happens when you put yourself in a position against a team that we should have beat by 10 or more points," forward Lamar Odom said. "We had them down 16 in the fourth. That was our first letdown of the season."

LAKERS 14-1

Hey everyone I'm back to give an obvious update about the Lakers! My Lakers have done such a good job so far that they have 14 wins and 1 loss. I'm so proud of them! I really would like to see them play Boston Celtics and actually show them up for last years loss! The Lakers on Tuesday begin a trip that takes them to Indianapolis, Philadelphia on Wednesday night and Washington on Friday night.

The challenge for the Lakers' deep and talented reserve unit is maintain a high level of success in hostile environments.

"I think we are mature enough to keep our composure, to keep our poise on the road," guard Sasha Vujacic said. "We did pretty good last year on the road, so coming into this season, I think we're more mature and we're playing together. We've just got to do what we're doing right now."

As of Monday, the Lakers' bench was the second-highest-scoring reserve group in the NBA, averaging 37.2 points per game. Minnesota (38.9 points) was first, Portland (36.9) third, San Antonio (36.8) fourth and Oklahoma City (36.8) fifth.

Lakers Coach Phil Jackson has talked about the difficulties his second-unit players face on the road: how they become more rattled, how they don't get many calls, how the game slows down.

"They have to be able to execute in the half-court game," Jackson said. "That's what we're really working with this young group at. Runs are good, transition defense, steals -- all those things. They are exploding the game a little bit with their higher-pace game. But then when that pace is over and they're into that half-court, we have to be able to execute."

Pacquiao vs. De La Hoya: The Biggest Fight of the Year

The Philippine Boxer is hoping that he will extend his streak by beating Oscar De La Hoya. Pacquiao has never lost a fight and I don't think that he will for a very long time. People call him the "Mexicutioner." This fight will be held on December 6, 2008 and I know that everyone is waiting for the big night to see who will win. You have to admit this will be an exciting game, because finally these two champions will come together. In my opinion, Pacquiao will do his thing and show everyone what he is made of again. Considered the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Pacquiao is walking around now near 150 pounds. He's buoyed by information from his trainer and promoters and is convinced he'll extend his current eight-fight winning streak that includes victories over Mexican stars Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez.

A computer study shows that in recent years De La Hoya's punch and jab rate steadily deteriorates after the sixth round in his fights. Longtime Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler drove in from Las Vegas to script with Pacquiao a strategy to beat the same fighter whose early career Trampler once so artfully directed.

Boxing followers have tabbed Pacquiao "The Mexicutioner" because of this winning streak, and Pacquiao is confidently promising De La Hoya, 35, will be the next to fall in their Dec. 6 fight.

"I think so," Pacquiao, 29, says, relaxing in his upscale Los Angeles apartment after a recent Hollywood gym training session. "He's not the good Oscar I saw before. He's still dangerous, but not as good as he was before."

Pacquiao will earn a guaranteed $11 million plus a possible pay-per-view percentage for the fight.

Buick Ends Endorsement With Tiger Woods

After nearly a decade (9 years to be exact) General Motors Corp. (Owners of Buick) has decided to end its 9-year endorsement deal with Tiger Woods. Who is the blame for all of this? Well it turns out that its the poor economy. GM released a statement stating that it is looking to cut down costs, and that Woods was looking forward to spending time at home with his growing family (he has a baby on the way.

Woods has endorsed GM products around the world and mainly has been seen in Buick commercials as the company tried to give the nameplate a more youthful image. “I am very proud of the long standing partnership I’ve had with GM and have enjoyed being a part of the company’s dramatic product evolution,” Woods said in a statement. GM’s statement said the company and Woods agreed together to end the deal, and the separation was amicable.

GM has been making dramatic cuts in advertising as it tries to conserve cash. The nation’s largest automaker spent nearly $7 billion more than it took in last quarter and has warned that it may reach the minimum amount required to run the company by the end of the year without federal help. Experts say a company that falls below minimum cash levels will have to stop paying some of its bills, a move that could force it into bankruptcy protection.

Safety for World Cup 2010

For any soccer fanatics out there, such as myself, the World Cup in 2010 seems to be quite a ways off. However, players and workers alike are already training and getting prepared for the 2010 World Cup. While players are out conditioning and training for this competition, South Africa is training by preparing their security to host this event.

The 2010 tournament will be held in South Africa, the "crime capitol" of the world. Hoping to ease the tension and fear of prospective spectators, World Cup organizers are ensuring that soccer fans will be able to safely watch the games in Africa. Chief Danny Jordaan, South Africa's organizing chief, has stated that there hasn't been a single incident during any big international events in South Africa since multiparty democracy in 1994.

"Crime in South Africa has steadily fallen in the past few years," says Deputy Police Commissioner, Andres Pruis. The South African government plans to spend a US dollar equivalent of 64 million dollars on 41,000 officers to patrol the World Cup and 66 million dollars on equipment such as helicopters, unmanned aircraft, border patrol and crowd-control equipment. All these efforts are in hopes of providing a safe atmosphere for fans to come enjoy the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and bring more attention to the beautiful wild life and nature that South Africa has to offer.

LAKERS 7-1

Yes, the Lakers had won so many good games. And they would have broken a record since the late 1990's. Pistons took the eighth game and had disappointed so many Laker fans. We would have never thought right? yeah hard to believe, i was disappointed in them too. but other than that, they are still in the lead with teams of 7 to 1! Nobody expected the Lakers to go 82-0, but nobody really predicted this either. The Lakers did more than lose to the Detroit Pistons. They were pushed, prodded and posted up in a 106-95 thumping Friday that brought back shades of their struggles against another physical Eastern Conference team in June.

Kobe Bryant couldn't shoot straight, the Pistons aimed and fired from wherever they desired, and, for the final ignominy, the Lakers surrendered a double-double to Kwame Brown (remember him?).

It was a weird scene, almost surreal, but the sight that had played out in their road games -- fans leaving early when a Lakers victory became apparent -- unfolded in reverse at Staples Center as fans headed for the exits in the final minutes.

The Lakers hadn't been 8-0 since 1997-98, but, well, that's now a swing and a miss.

"We didn't do nothing good as a team -- defense, offense, extra effort, loose balls, steals," forward Lamar Odom said.

The Lakers (7-1), for all their success, had pushed the envelope in many of their victories.

They needed a 14-point fourth quarter from Bryant to slip past Denver and a 22-0 run after trailing the Clippers in the fourth quarter.

They trailed Houston by 16 in the second quarter, Dallas by 10 in the third quarter and almost blew a 21-point fourth-quarter lead Wednesday in New Orleans.

Perhaps it finally caught up to them, karma turning its cheek when the Lakers leaned in for another peck.

Bryant scored 29 points against the Pistons but took a whopping 30 shots, making only 12.

Derek Fisher, a source of stability in a 20-point effort against New Orleans, missed 12 of 16 shots and finished with nine points.

Vladimir Radmanovic failed to find his stroke, scoring two points on one-for-six shooting.

"Kobe and Fish both had difficult nights shooting the ball," Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said. "You're not going to win sometimes when that happens."

And to think Detroit was coming off a push-the-pace victory 24 hours earlier at Golden State.

It was the Lakers, however, who looked tired.

They trailed immediately, 12-2, and never led by more than two.

Radmanovic and Fisher were scoreless in the first half, missing all 10 of their combined shots as the Lakers went into halftime with a 53-44 deficit.

It didn't get much better from there, the Pistons leading by as many as 20 in the fourth quarter before the Lakers made it look a little better by the time the final horn sounded.

New acquisition Allen Iverson had 25 points, as did old Lakers nemesis Rasheed Wallace.

Kings Lose to Ducks

Yesterday was the freeway series for the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings and they were there for a good cause. With all of the fires in Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties, some of the profits were to raise money for the families who have been affected by the devastating fire.

It was the Ducks' second shutout in the last two meetings between the Southern California rivals. The last time they met on Nov. 4 at Staples Center, the Ducks won 1-0 on Chris Pronger's overtime goal. The only other time the Ducks have had consecutive shutouts against the Kings in 2000-01, both in Anaheim by 4-0 scores.

"If you don't score, you don't win," Kings goalie Erik Ersberg said. "[Hiller] played good in net at the other end, so it happens. We played a good team tonight and we gave it our best effort. Maybe we ran out of gas in at the end. It was like this the last game, too. We couldn't get the puck in the net."

Ersberg, whose current string of seven consecutive starts began with the previous meeting against the Ducks, made 24 saves in the rematch. Ersberg has allowed just 14 goals during the last seven games (4-2-1).

Top Free Agents in MLB

The economic crisis may be effecting NASCAR, but this little recession we may be going through most likely wont hurt the player of MLB.

Mark Teixeira of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, is the top free agent available this offseason for a number of reasons. Usually, the top position player free agent would be someone who plays a skill position, but this market is thin at those spots -- middle infield, catcher, center fielder and third base. Of the corner bats available, Teixeira offers the best combination of offensive production, defensive value and youth.

Derek Lowe of the Los Angeles Dodgers, entered free agency after the 2004 season on the heels of his worst year as a starter. He had capped it off with some great work in October that made the four-year deal given to him by the Dodgers and then-GM Paul DePodesta seem irrationally exuberant. But since the deal, Lowe has posted four straight seasons with ERAs under 3.90 and at least 199 innings pitched..

Milton Bradley of the Texas Rangers has always has had the ability to put up the kind of season he did in 2008, but injuries and his temper have conspired to limit his opportunities. He's a true switch-hitter who has plate discipline and plus raw power from both sides of the plate. He recognizes off-speed pitches well, lets the ball travel, then unleashes his bat, taking advantage of the speed in his wrists. In other words, he's exactly the player he was a year ago, but with a better platform year to take into free agency.

NASCAR- Teams Will NOT Test in 2009

Economy is hurting everyone, now its hit the NASCAR franchise real hard. NASCAR will implement a no-testing policy next season in order to save millions of dollars during a massive downturn in the U.S. economy.

NASCAR officials met with teams' crew chiefs Friday morning at Homestead-Miami Speedway to inform them of the change. The official announcement is expected later today. All tracks that have NASCAR events in the top three series -- Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Craftsman Trucks, which will be renamed Camping World Trucks next season -- are expected to be included in the testing ban.

The change also is expected to include Daytona International Speedway and the traditional two weeks of test sessions in January before the '09 season begins. "It has pluses and minuses," said Pat Tryson, crew chief for the No. 2 Dodge driven by Kurt Busch. "Times are tough right now, so it's probably not that bad a thing for most people. It's the same for everybody. It may make the racing better with nobody having the opportunity to test." This is a dramatic change from the idea NASCAR officials proposed to the teams two months ago, when the plan was to increase testing to 24 sessions per team, with every Cup track included. But the faltering economy caused NASCAR to rethink that idea and take a major step to limit costs.

Many teams spend more than $3 million a season on testing. Each test day can run more than $100,000 per car in expenses. Cup teams had lobbied for more testing at Cup tracks to gain valuable data on the new car at each Cup facility. Only a few tracks had open test sessions this year, so teams were forced to test at tracks where NASCAR doesn't have Cup races. The new policy will not keep teams from testing at non-NASCAR tracks.

NBAs: Battle of Los Angeles 106

LAL 108 LAC 88. Los Angeles is my home town, and basically that's where my heart stays! What happens when two teams from the same city play against each other? A very exciting game it will be! I'm a huge Laker fan and yeah I still respect the LA Clippers, but you gotta admit, this is LAKERS season to take it! Lakers are on a record of 4-0! I usually have an article when writing about sports, but I always watch the Laker game. Lakers came back and they are ready to win. I was surprised because LAC had an overturn before half-time. But our Lakers never let us down.
The Lakers entered Wednesday night's game against the Clippers with a +21.6 point differential through their first three games, easily the NBA's best. Through four games the Clippers were -23 per night, by far the worst mark in the Association.

It was a game where nothing had to give... and it didn't. Using a 22-0 run over seven-plus minutes in the fourth quarter, the Lakers ran away with what was a close game early, winning 106-88. The LAC actually held a four point lead at halftime, but whether it was an inspired speech from Phil Jackson, a particularly refreshing batch of Gatorade, or the simple realization that, at least right now, the Clippers aren't that good, LAL came out with fire to start the third, erasing a four point deficit and setting the tone for a strong final two quarters. Had they been able to hit the broad side of a barn with their shots- it wasn't until the fourth quarter that the Lakers shot better than 40%- the purple and gold would have put this one on ice a lot faster.

Kobe led the way with 27 points, bolstered by 15 from Lamar Odom and 13 from Derek Fisher.

Lakers, you gotta love them (=

Boston at Houston

It was Boston's turn last season, how bout this season? It has been said that Boston has been terrible with their turnovers and other things. Houston is 3-0 right now and they're ready for the Boston Celtics! I'm excited to see how this game will come about. I really want Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers to play against each other once again! In my opinion, I think that Paul Pierce is one cocky man. But we shall see how they come out with the Houston Rockets!
Fans got it right with this one, choosing to see the Rockets and C's on NBA TV over the possible Spurs/Mavericks or Suns/Nets contests in an NBA.com poll.

The runner-ups should be a pair of entertaining duels, but we could have a Finals preview in this Rockets/Celtics matchup, and it's good that the pairing will take to the national stage.

It should be a low-scoring affair, even as the Celtics (third in pace) and Rockets (14th) are running a bit more than expected this far into the season. Boston is having terrible issues with turnovers, throwing away 20 miscues a game, far and away the worst mark in the league.

Meanwhile, Houston is doing its damage by not damaging the opponent. The Rockets are averaging a league-best 16 fouls a night, which no doubt is leading to their third-ranked defense thus far.

On top of that, we have two gimpies (Ray Allen and Tracy McGrady) chasing each other around, with two burly wing beasts in Paul Pierce and Ron Artest set to do battle. Actual battle. With swords and shields and honor.

Yao Ming is averaging 22 and 11. Kevin Garnett is contributing 16 and 10 in only 32 minutes, and both outfits can boast scary-good benches.

No BtB tomorrow, I'm going to take in a night on the tube with my sights set elsewhere, but you can be sure I'll be recording this one on the other tuner and referring to it quite a bit. This isn't hyperbole, this could be a Finals matchup; and an especially intriguing one as neither franchise is likely to make much of an overhaul between now and the playoffs.

Lakers are Bad News for the Rest of the West

What's most exciting about living in Southern California, is being a big fan of the LAKERS! I believe that this year is Lakers year. Although it has been 3 games, they remain undefeated. The most entertaining game would have to be Battle of LA. Between Los Angeles Clippers (LAC) and Los Angeles Lakers (LAL). Me being a girl, I didn't even know the Clippers were still alive. They managed to play a good game towards the Lakers though. The Lakers has 3 great players (listed in the article), yet Fisher decided to take Odom off the bench. I found this article that seems really interesting.

There’s a big problem brewing in Los Angeles. As in, too many bigs. The Lakers have future All-Star center Andrew Bynum back from a knee injury, along with former All-Star Pau Gasol at power forward. Then there’s 6-10 forward Lamar Odom, a guy so versatile he has averaged as many as 5.9 assists in one season and 10.6 rebounds in another. But coach Phil Jackson only wants two of the three to start, which has meant the Lakers must bring Odom off the bench.

Such a dilemma. “Yeah,” said Portland coach Nate McMillan with a roll of the eyes, “that’s a problem every coach would like to have.”

Indeed, the Lakers seem to be dealing with it just fine. Odom initially bristled at the bench idea — he had started 369 straight games before coming in as sixth man on opening night — but he has come around, and Jackson is anticipating no problems from Odom. “He is going to handle it professionally,” Jackson said.

Just as big a concern as Odom’s new role is the ability of Gasol and Bynum to play together in the starting lineup. At least, it’s a concern within Lakers circles. For those of us looking in from the outside, it sure looks like putting Gasol and Bynum together is not much of a problem at all. Don’t tell Gasol that, though.

“We play in the same area a lot, so, of course you have to worry,” Gasol said. “It will work out. We are two dominant 7-footers, and we need to prove to everybody that we are a force. But it’s not like we can just go out there and everyone will be afraid of us and get out of our way.”

It’s only two games, but the Lakers have yet to receive much of a challenge, and that’s thanks to an overlooked benefit of having Bynum and Gasol on the floor together — the defense is impenetrable, with Bynum’s big body clogging the lanes and Gasol’s gangly arms slapping harassing players in the high post. Throw in tough perimeter defenders like Kobe Bryant and Trevor Ariza, and the Lakers have gained a defensive ferocity that they seemed to be missing last year.

Rice to go to the NFL?

On the afternoon of January 20, 2009, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will find herself unemployed. She might not be that way for long. Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reported this weekend that the San Francisco 49ers are interested in hiring Rice to serve in a high-level position within the organization.

This is not the first time Rice's name has been bandied about for a gig with the National Football League. She told the New York Times in 2002 that her dream job is to be NFL Commissioner. And Condi's name is still on the short-list of possible candidates to replace Gene Upshaw as executive director of the NFL Player's Association.

Rice is a long-time football fan who grew up rooting for the Cleveland Browns and still manages to catch most games on Sundays. After her term as Secretary of State ends, Rice had been planning to move back to California, where she previously served as Stanford provost (and had a hand in hiring former NFL coach Dennis Green, among others).

How this makes her qualified to run an NFL team is anyone's guess. Still, it's not like the 49ers can get any worse. Maybe throwing a Hail Mary to Condi is what the organization needs in order to get back on track after what will likely be their sixth-straight losing season.

For the record, the 49ers issued a soft rebuttal to Schefter's story, saying:

"We don't respond to rumors. We have our office structure in place."

Sounds like the Niners are spouting the standard non-denial denial of Washington politicians. In that case, should Condi head to the Bay Area, she'll probably feel right at home.

Ski Resorts take out Suggestive Pictures on Snowboards

A half-dozen ski resorts in New England and the West are joining in protests against two new lines of snowboards that feature images of Playboy models and cartoons of self-mutilation.

Why do people want a almost naked girl on their snowboard? Its not like they want to become "excited" when they are snowboarding. It doesn't make sense. Is it a pride thing that men just have to show that they love women? In particular half naked women?

Smugglers' Notch in Vermont says it has banned employees from using the Love and Primo boards made by Burton Snowboards.

Vail Resorts has prohibited employees of its Vail, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek and Keystone resorts in Colorado and California's Heavenly Mountain from using the Love boards or any other inappropriate, offensive or suggestive equipment while on duty.

The boards also led to a demonstration last week outside Burton's headquarters in Burlington, Vt.

Burton CEO Laurent Potdevin says the company supports freedom of artistic expression and stands by the boards.

How to Overcome Childhood Obesity

America is known as the fast food nation. But how could we overcome this heavy tragedy? I think that children are playing less outside and more inside, which means less physical activity. Videogames, computer games, t.v., and other inside things can distract a child from playing outside. But we can't always blame obeisty for laziness, it could also mean it could have came genetically. Which isn't the childs fault, and no where near it. Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Childhood obesity is particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start kids on the path to health problems that were once confined to adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

One of the best strategies to combat excess weight in your child is to improve the diet and exercise levels of your entire family. This helps protect the health of your child now and in the future.

Risk factors
Many factors — usually working in combination — increase your child's risk of becoming overweight:

+Diet. Regular consumption of high-calorie foods, such as fast foods, baked goods and vending machine snacks, contribute to weight gain. High-fat foods are dense in calories. Loading up on soft drinks, candy and desserts also can cause weight gain.
Foods and beverages like these are high in sugar and calories.

+Inactivity. Sedentary kids are more likely to gain weight because they don't burn calories through physical activity. Inactive leisure activities, such as watching television or playing video games, contribute to the problem.

+Genetics. If your child comes from a family of overweight people, he or she may be genetically predisposed to put on excess weight, especially in an environment where high-calorie food is always available and physical activity isn't encouraged.

+Psychological factors. Some children overeat to cope with problems or to deal with emotions, such as stress or boredom. Their parents may have similar tendencies.

+Family factors. Most children don't shop for the family's groceries. Indeed, parents are responsible for putting healthy foods in the kitchen at home and leaving unhealthy foods in the store. You can't blame your kids for being attracted to sweet, salty and fatty foods; after all they taste good. But you can control much of their access to these foods, especially at home.

+Socioeconomic factors. Children from low-income backgrounds are at greater risk of becoming obese. Poverty and obesity often go hand in hand because low-income parents may lack the time and resources to make healthy eating and exercise a family priority.

Chelsea block Ballack crisis talks

English Premier League leaders Chelsea have refused to allow Michael Ballack to travel to Germany to meet coach Joachim Loew for crisis talks which could determine his international future.

The London club's coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said that with Ballack still recovering from surgery on his feet, the player will stay in England to continue his fight for fitness.

"Ballack plays for Chelsea. If Loew wants to talk to Ballack I invite the coach to come here and stay with us for one or two days and talk to him," said Scolari. The German football federation (DFB) confirmed that Chelsea had told them of their decision.

"We have a received a fax from Chelsea informing us that the club will not allow Ballack to go to Germany for health reasons," DFB spokesman Harald Stenger told the SID news agency. Loew wants to meet Ballack after the Germany skipper claimed the coach didn't show enough respect and loyalty to his senior players. Earlier Friday, Bayern Munich coach Jurgen Klinsmann told Ballack to apologise for his damning criticism of Loew.

"Every discussion between a senior player and the coach should happen behind locked doors. But Ballack does not seem to adhere to a code of conduct anymore." Matthaus added: "He runs everything past the media. The trust in him has been lost."

The incident began on Tuesday after Ballack told the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper that: "Experienced national players deserve at least some respect and loyalty. Ballack did go to the media for attention and did breached the team's code of conduct. Ballack made the mistake to reach for attention instead of talking to the people he was having a problem with. Now whether one person has right of way, its truly hard to tell since everything is all twisted.

Who Says Dancing isn't a Sport?

Believe it or not, but dancing is a sport! I myself dance. And believe me, it isn't a easy thing to do. I particularly dance Polynesian, and it's a WORK OUT! Since I have started dancing, I've had stronger thighs, better stamina, and much more things I could benefit from that. When we perform, we are smiling through our teeth... and breathing heavily at the same time! Other sports probably can't do that. haha People look at Polynesian dancing as a form of entertainment, yes that's true, but for the dancers it's our passion and our work out! Ballet, Tap, any other kind of dancing, I believe it is a sport. We compete with each other like football and their games. So what's the difference?! For instance, figure skating.. is it dancing? of course.. and it's in the Olympics that we have competed with other countries all over the world! simple as that

"Sport" is just more than one person playing a certain game or activity against another person, in a non harmful way of course. The activity must be governed by rules. so yeah, dancing is a sport - there are tons of dance leagues and competitions around the world

The Shoes That Cruise

Remember the good all days when you would roller skate to the store or even just around your front yard. It was quite fun being with friends and showing off your nice skates. But now a days they are no where in site. Well, Sketchers and Puma going to try to help the faded out roller skates. They are both trying to bring roller skates back in style.

Sketchers have opted to call their roller skates 4 Wheelers, while the folks at Puma are calling theirs Roller Kitty. Both companies have basically just added wheels and stoppers (front and back for the 4 Wheelers, just front for the Roller Kitty) to a pair of regular shoes.

Personally, Roller Kitties looks pretty good. Puma's have a kind of simple, old school style that works well for roller skates. The 4 Wheelers, on the other hand, aren't so great looking. And style names like "Glimmer," "Freerider," and "Medallion" don't make them any more appealing.

Also the name Roller Kitties isn't so appealing. Same with the names for the 4 Wheelers. But if they are trying advertise to the children then it may be appropriate.

This may be nice effort to bring the roller skates back to life, but I don't think the roller skate fad will last very long. Well, that is if it actually starts.

Sports are Beneficial for the Elderly

As much as I want to promote kids to excerise more, I really would like the Elderly to exercise more. Now I'm not talking going to the gym and over exhausting yourself, but I think that a daily walk in the park, something simple like that is good enough. Before I read this article, I thought to myself, that it's only common sense that an elderly person could exercise they could live much longer (meaning their life expectancy has expanded). Exercise could improve blood pressure, diabetes, and much more. I think that it is very vital that the elderly should start taking part in this. Regular physical activity is also associated with decreased mortality and age-related morbidity in older adults. Despite this, up to 75 percent of older Americans are insufficiently active to achieve these health benefits.

Few contraindications to exercise exist, and almost all older persons can benefit from additional physical activity. The exercise prescription consists of three components: aerobic exercise, strength training, and balance and flexibility. Physicians play a key role in motivating older patients and advising them regarding their physical limitations and/or comorbidities. Motivating patients to begin exercise is best achieved by focusing on individual patient goals, concerns, and barriers to exercise. Strategies include the "stages of change" model, individualized behavioral therapy, and an active lifestyle. To increase long-term compliance, the exercise prescription should be straightforward, fun, and geared toward a patient's individual health needs, beliefs, and goals. The Red Sox are Coming Back!!

The Red Sox were disappointed everyone this year. Especially, during the seventh inning for the requisite, I really thought it was just they didn't have it this year.
The Sox have gone though a lot of downs lately. They missed Manny. They didn't have enough reliable relievers. They had too many young guys with Schiraldian looks on their faces, too many pseudo-fans in the stands, too few free spirits in the dugout. They never should have let Josh Beckett pitch to those last two batters in Game 2. They never should have put Mike Timlin on the playoff roster, much less brought him in for the 11th inning of Game 2. And now, they were going down with a whimper. They were going to get swept in the middle three games at home, three humiliating losses to their formerly scrawny stepbrother in the AL East. Our boys seemed fine with it, and that was what really troubled us. The Sox became unrecognizable.

But then in Game , Hurting and homerless, Big Papi came through once again in Game 5.
And all of the sudden the spirts of the fans totally started cheering and going crazy for their beloved team.

After Papi feebly whiffed on four pitches for the second out, Kevin Youkilis slapped a grounder to Evan Longoria, who made a terrific back-handed stab and then flubbed the throw. The ball bounced over Pena's glove and into the stands, sending Yook to second and spawning a fantastic replay of Joe Maddon staring out onto the field like one of the Fortune 500 CEOs watching the Dow drop another 500 points. Like, he knew it was falling apart and there was nothing he could do, only there was a dugout camera 3 inches from his face. That was when Maddon made a crucial mistake by walking Bay to pitch to Drew.

So let's just agree a memorable baseball game happened Thursday night. It delighted a large group of people and devastated a much smaller group. Everyone else marveled at the comeback and probably thought the outcome was unfair, considering the payrolls and the histories of the respective franchises. Unbelievable, memorable, but slightly unfair. And that's fine.

Sports are Good for Children

If you don't know about America's rapidly growing rate of obesity, then where have you been?! America has been struggling with the food industry and it's most definitely not getting any better! American Children are getting the heavy end of this dilemma. Parents should be informed how to teach their students to eat healthy. It's becoming a fat nation for us, and we simply cannot let that happen! If you look at the statistics, we really are the fattest country! We are a wealthy country yet, we don't know how to handle that. One solution I think that we need is for children to start playing sports! Sports are and have always been a good thing to keep up with kid's health and endurance to do/experience new things. We most definitely do not want our kids stuck at home all day playing video games now do we? Sports not only maintains a good health.. it gives a lot more.

Sports provide a positive learning experience that will enhance your child's ability to develop self confidence, good sportsmanship and teamwork skills. Sports also teach all of us to work hard and have a little fun at the same time.

In sports, children are challenged both mentally and physically. Coaches teach the roles of the game, strategy to win, and how to work together. Your child will also build skills, endurance, and strength.

Perhaps the greatest life lessons are learned in sports. Winning does not come easy; you've got to work for it. "Winners never quit and quitters never win." Life isn't fair. Sometimes you give it your all and you still lose. When you lose, pick yourself up and try again.

Younger children learn socialization through sports. Sharing, listening, and following rules are the fundamentals picked up in earlier years of sports.

Self-esteem is something you cannot give your child. We gain positive self-esteem through accomplishments. In sports, your child can reach goals, big and small, and feel good about themselves. It is not important to be the star. Teach your child to strive to reach personal goals.

In sports there are setbacks, defeats and even injuries. How you handle it says a lot about your character. Your child will be a lot happier if he or she learns to take setbacks in stride and concentrates on doing better next time.

If your child decides to play a sport, make sure you are playing your role the best way you can. Don't pressure your child. Instead be supportive and help him or her through any difficulties or conflicts. It's great to practice with your child, but don't be overbearing and make practice feel like a punishment.

DODGERS BEAT PHILLIES

Basketball season is done, so is the olympics. So what's next for the sports fans out there? Everyone is hyped up on baseball! Especially around LA, Dogdger fans have been lining up for tickets to watch the game. The Dodgers, 7 and the Phillies, 2. If anyone watched the game last night, you saw a home run, and bases were loaded for the Dodgers. It has been an exciting season for the Dodgers and they are not going to let the Phillies get to their head.. especially how they have been pitching to the Dodgers lately. The Dodgers finally stood up in this series, winning a game with two more at home, where they are a best-in-baseball 24-9 since the All-Star break. We are all excited for the upcoming achievement that Los Angeles teams have been doing. Lakers are rising, and will be prepared for next time. The Dodgers are ready for anything that any team will throw at them.
Before a record crowd of 56,800, the Dodgers came out swinging against Moyer. The first three Dodgers all singled, with an RBI going to Ramirez, who had touched Moyer for 10 homers and 20 RBIs in his career. Martin was hit by a pitch and Casey Blake had an RBI single before DeWitt's key hit. Rafael Furcal added a second-inning homer.

Kuroda allowed two runs in six-plus innings before turning it over to Cory Wade and Jonathan Broxton.

For the moment, the Dodgers have the momentum.

"We won a game and have a good feeling about ourselves," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "Hopefully we've planted a seed of doubt" in the Phillies' heads.

As for the brushback pitches, Torre said, "I don't look on it as bad blood. It's baseball. I really don't think this is anything long-lasting."

Sports are Good for the Soul

Playing sports is usually a social activity. Which one learns to get along with other people if he wants to enjoy a game. It is important in a child's development to learn to get along with others, to share the ball, etc. Sports allows people the opportunity to practice getting along with those who bother them, and those who they like, a skill that is crucial when joining the workforce.

People of all colors, ethnicities, and nationalities come together under one roof, rubbing shoulders, elbows, in an effort to get close to others who support a similar cause. People tend to learn about others from different backgrounds when they play on the same team.

Sports teaches valuable lesson in life. Like ethics, playing clean, but hard, not cheating, that there are wins and losses and about rewards and consequences for our actions. If a child is shelter all their life and does not experience the nature of a game then they are setting themselves up for a great disappointment when they realize the hardship it takes.

As a member of a sports team, I have learned the importance of working together to achieve one common goal. I have lost some games and won some games too. The feeling of an achievement, just makes me feel great and a glow shines all over me. This is something that everyone should experience, and an active lifestyle does mean a healthier body.

Rays-Red Sox Preview

The Rays were the last team standing in a 5-hour, 27-minute marathon win over the Red Sox in Game 2 of the ALCS. It was yet another "pinch us" moment from a feel-good season for Tampa Bay. As thrilled as the Tampa Bay Rays were by their extra-inning victory to even the AL championship series, the Boston Red Sox are pretty excited, too. With the series shifting to Fenway Park for the next three games, the Red Sox look to continue their dominance in Boston on Monday (TODAY!!!) in Game 3 of the ALCS as they try to prevent the Rays from building off their big win. Boston and Tampa Bay combined for seven home runs, tying a postseason record, but the game was won on B.J. Upton's sacrifice fly in the 11th inning as the Rays outlasted the Red Sox 9-8.

"We did not want to go to Boston down 0-2," said Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria, who opened the home run barrage with a two-run shot in the first inning to snap an 0-for-13 drought. Upton and Cliff Floyd also homered as the Rays appeared to steal away the momentum with their Game 2 win, but the Red Sox would argue they have the advantage with the next three games being at Fenway.

"Why not?" Boston's David Ortiz asked. "Return to the house. Good things happen over there." The Red Sox had the majors' second-best home record at 56-25 this season, and have won 12 of their last 15 playoff games at Fenway. "I don't really see the sense of urgency right now," said Boston's Jon Lester, who has not lost at home since April and will start Monday. "We're at home, and we've got three against them here, and hopefully we can put up a good fight these next couple games and pick up a couple wins."

Lakers have yet to take its form

The Lakers are down 0-2 in the exhibition games, with one defeat being handed to them by their LA counterpart the Clippers with a score of 102-80. The Lakers said they are not worried, which I guess is a sign that the Lakers have yet to take on their real form. THat form would have to be tested in the Lakers' first season game on October 28 with the Portland Trail Blazers. An LA Times raised the same questions that I have had for quite a while now, which is "how would the current LA roster work together efficiently?" The good news is that they are loaded with talent, but the bad news is that well...they might have too much talent. I do believe though that the Lakers can work things out in the season. Kobe has been a steady leader lately, far mature than he was during the Shaq era. I am sure that he would be able to carry this team once more on his back and that his support cast would learn to give way to each other. It is too early to predict whetehr the Lakers can pull off another trip to the Finals, much less win the title, but it certainly is within their reach. They just ahev to make sure that they find their rhythm as soon as possible and not miss a beat.

Ellis gets suspension with no pay

For Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis, "adding salt to the injury" almost seems like a lieteral phrase. After getting into a moped accident, in which he had badly sprained his ankle, Ellis was suspended by team officials for 30 games. The reason for the suspension is rooted in an NBA regulation which "prohibits a player from engaging 'in any activity that a reasonable person would recognize as involving or exposing the participant to a substantial risk of bodily injury'". Coach Don Nelson and Warriors' executive Chris Mullin tried to convince team president Robert Rowell to forego the punishment, but Rowell declined. Ellis's suspension will not deal hand additional losses to his on-court presence, however, since he had been expected to sit out some games due to an operation from another injury. What Ellis' would lose out on in this suspension would be part of his salary, which is estimated to be about 3 million dollars. Ellis is a significant part of the Warriors offense, which has been the highest scoring team in the NBA last season. His seaosn avergaes were: "20.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists.(AP)"

Kobe's Silence Louder than Shaq

We all know that Kobe has been named Most Valuable Player for the year 2008. He basically represented Los Angeles and our country. Kobe is one gifted basketball player who is determined and I don't see him stopping. But there was a thing that kind of made people realize back a couple of years ago.. he was known to be kind of cocky. all ball hog you might say. but this article that i found to be quite interesting. Kobe has grown up, and he really do cares about what other people think of him. He's matured a lot and basically wanted to deal with all the commotion of fame firmly. I think after reading this article, it shows Kobe's maturity and his ability to be open arms with Shaq. Even though Shaq has talked "crap" Kobe uses a strategy that involves silence. I think that Kobe handles situations better than Shaq. And in my perspective, Shaq is just pissed that someone took the spotlight away from him. Kobe is still young and energetic, while Shaq is huffing and puffing on the basketball courts.

He's become a team guy, and along the way, Bryant did something spectacular. He didn't respond to O'Neal's vicious rap attack. He brushed it off, realizing there are battles that he just can't win. And to his shock, he came out unsullied.

"The biggest mistake I made was (always) coming up with a rebuttal (to O'Neal)," Bryant said. "My philosophy had always been to keep quiet and not to say anything. And by me responding, that drew me into it. If I had to do it over again, I would've just let people talk and say what they had to say."

Angels Live to Fight Another Day

After 12 innings and a long five hour game that ended nearly at 1am in the morning (EST), the Angels avoid a sweep, and live to fight another day. That's right, after 11 consecutive losses and two straight playoff sweeps, the Los Angeles Angels had grown tired of being a bump in Boston's road to the World Series. We are so devastated, well at least I am.

In 11 straight playoff losses to the Red Sox dating back to 1986, the Angels lost in every conceivable fashion: home and away, on walkoff homers and in one-sided routs. You name it, and the Angels found a way to lose. Finally, with a run-scoring single from Erick Aybar in the top of the 12th inning, the Angels stumbled upon a recipe for victory, edging the Sox 5-4 in an American League Division Series marathon. For much of the night, this one seemed headed for a predictable result. The Angels left multiple runners on base in the first, second, fourth and seventh. They allowed a rather benign blooper to drop between three onlookers, leading to the first three Red Sox runs. Then, just for good measure, because they’re the Angels and this is the postseason, they ran into an out on the bases in a big spot when Torii Hunter tried to stretch a single into a double leading off the ninth.

Now, with game 4 tonight they play with a lead and try to make sure the Angels don’t do to them what the Sox did against New York and Cleveland. The Red Sox must win tonight. And we have one thing that the Angels don't, heart and Lester.

Lakers' big men meet on court

The Lakers training camp might be a sign of good things to come. Andrew Bynum and Pau gasol are now practicing together with the rest of the team, and seem to getting along just fine. It remains to be seen whether "getting along" would translate to a formidable chemistry on court, though. The Lakers is stockpiled with players that would man the frontcourt, and Phil Jackson would have to do a good job of giving them some court action. Bynum and Gasol are only two of the Lakers' front court warriors, along with Lamar Odom, Chris Mihm and Ronnie Turiaf. A little give and take would be very essential if the Lakers are to succeed this year, which most folks predict they would. I leave the predictions aside, however, and prefer to hang tight till the end of the season to see if the Lakers can pull it off. After all, the Western Conference is a roller coaster, where there is no such thing as an assured victory. Competition is the name of the game, and my only bet is that the Lakers will have the talent and the firepower to duke it out.

Davis heads SoCal

So Baron Davis has made a trip down South to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers. His friend Corey Maggette said that Davis was about to have "a rude awakening" in his new team. Whatever that means, I think the LA Clippers should be glad to have Baron Davis on board. The current roster is filled with exciting young athletes who has the potential to become a major force in the league, but somehow lacks the discipline needed to pull ahead. Baron Davis not only provides the additional muscle needed in the point guard position for the Clippers, he would also help the team orchestrate better plays. I still expect the Clippers to showcase their usual flashiness on court, but I also expect that they would be more than just an NBA version of the Harlem Globetrotters. Davis would bring discipline onto the court without sacrificing thrill performances. Golden State, on the other hand, got an OK deal by getting Corey Maggette, but would likely suffer some losses during the season due to Davis' departure.

Beckett Pushed Back to Game 3 of ALDS; Lester Gets Opener

With the season for baseball now over, its time for the post-season to kick in. And what better way to start it off with a show down between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem. But things will start off a little shaky at the Anahiem stadium (set to start this Wednesday) with the Red Sox ace player sitting out. osh Beckett's first start in the AL first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Angels was pushed back to Game 3 after the Boston Red Sox ace injured his side throwing a bullpen session. Jon Lester will pitch the opener for the Boston Red Sox at the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night, followed by Daisuke Matsuzaka on Friday night, manager Terry Francona said.

Beckett, a postseason star, is slated to start Sunday's game at Fenway Park. A fourth game, if necessary, would be played in Boston next Monday. "He has to be able to go out there and execute his pitches," Francona said, "but I think he's going to be OK." Francona said after Sunday night's regular-season finale that Beckett strained the oblique muscle in his side on the 40th pitch of his normal side session Friday in the rain before the opener of a three-game series with the New York Yankees.

"I don't think it's frustrating," Francona said. "Things happen and you deal with them and if you deal with them well enough, you handle it. If you don't, you go home." In 2007 when the Red Sox won their second World Series in four years, Beckett was 4-0 in the postseason after going 20-7 with a 3.27 ERA during the regular season. In 10 postseason outings during his career, he is 6-2 with a 1.73 ERA.

Im betting that the Red Sox will take it all again this year. But that's just because I'm a little biased.

Kobe Bryant: All that?

So we all know that Kobe Bryant is MVP. Do you think he really deserves it? Since he joined the Lakers, the Lakers has been smooth sailing on the basketball courts. And of course, America had to have our MVP play in the Olympics. With having the best group of basketball players play against the other countries, that turned out to be a success as well! You would think that Kobe is proud of his 81 points he scored in one game, but really he was actually embarrassed. Who would have thought. People say that he's cocky and he's conceited. And I believe he has every right to be! But he isn't, not full on cocky but he knows how hard he worked to get where he's at today. You think about how Kobe started his NBA career right out of high school, and he has done so much since then.

He is trying to lead the Lakers to a successful season, and ultimately, a good showing in the NBA playoffs. Bryant leads the NBA in scoring, averaging 35.7 points per game. In January, with his 81 point game, he averaged 43.4 points per game. He joined Chamberlain again in the record books as the only other player to average over 40 points per game in a single month. He says winning is the most important thing for the Lakers.

"The concept is not about going out there and putting on a show or going out there and scoring points," he said. "It-s to win games. I-d much rather go out and score 25 points and get 10 assists and see everybody in a rhythm, everybody in a groove." About Chamberlain-s mark Bryant said, "I don-t even think about it. That-s unthinkable. It was done once by Wilt, and I-m not Wilt."

NFL Curse?

First, it happened to Tom Brady, now there is a great possibility that it can happen to Green Bay Packers corner back Al Harris. Is this some sort of football curse going around or what? Doctors have discovered that he may have a ruptured spleen that was due to a game in which the Packers lost to the Dallas Cowboys. The National Football Post, a Web site that lists Harris' agent as a contributor, reported that the injury could end Harris' season. Harris' agent Jack Bechta said the 33-year-old veteran had some internal bleeding and the initial diagnosis is that he ruptured his spleen, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He would most likely miss the season, it would just depend on the severity," Bechta told the newspaper. "But we don't have any definitive information except there was a rupture. Now we have to get him to a specialist as soon as possible." And while nothing is definitive, Bechta said the odds of Harris returning this year aren't good. "Any time you have a ruptured spleen, you're not going to take any chances because it can re-rupture and be worse and then you have to have it removed," Bechta told the Journal Sentinel. "If that's the case, then there's always risk for infection. We're going to take a really conservative approach. "Most doctors will tell a player to forego a season just because of all the downside risk. The conservative answer now from the original [diagnosis], I believe from Dr. [John] Gray, is to shut it down. But nothing is imminent as of yet." Earlier in the day, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the team's medical staff was "just doing scans" on Harris and was "checking for everything." A team spokesman said no additional information was available. Packers defensive backs coach Kurt Schottenheimer told the Journal Sentinel he didn't know Harris' status, but he did say the loss of Harris would have a major impact on the team. "We just hope for the best for Al," Schottenheimer told the newspaper. "He brings such a spirit to the team, the way he plays. D-Miles gets nailed for drugs

Darius Miles has been suspended by the Boston Celtics for drug violations a month after he signed with the team. Miles will not be eligible to play with the team during the first ten games of the season. To me, the punishment seems just right. I am just glad that the Feds did not get involved in this whole mess. A league like the NBA can certainly come up with its own regulations regarding illicit drugs, but things get funky when the government gets involved in these kinds of matters. Private organizatons, leagues, and companies are much more able to cook up their own policies rather than a politically motivated and distant government. Private groups like the Boston Celtics have more incentives to make sure that their images are always good especially in an environment like the NBA where publicity means a lot, if not everything. D-Miles should start cleaning up his act when he gets back intop the league. Sports is something that's supposed to instill an ethic of discipline in people. Miles's actions taints that image.

Sports world loses a doctor

Sports doctor Tony Daly, 74, passed away Friday after a long struggle against prostate cancer. Daly's career was marked by significant accomplishments. He was the Los Angeles Clippers' team doctor and "director of sports medicine at the Diagnostic and Interventional Sports Care and Orthopedics center in Marina del Rey" when he died. The most significant accomplishment in his arsenal, however, was his service to the 1980 US Hockey Team, which won a gold medal with the former Soviet Union. Daly's friend Peter Ueberroth said that Daly should be given credit for getting several players on the team ready for the game.

Daly's long and successful career was marked by versatility. He did not limit himself to one or two sports. Among of his other gigs include stints as "a member of the International Olympic Committee's medical staff at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984" and doctor for two Team USA Olympic basketball teams. Daly even worked with high-profile boxers such as Oscar Dela Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. He held other posts, but the previous examples show how multifaceted he was as a sports doctor. Close colleagues consider his death a loss to sports.

Free Agents class of 2009

In the summer of 2008, a couple of free agents got some big bucks big time. For example, Elton Brand left the Clippers to the tyne of $80 million from Philly. I find this article really amusing and interesting just because this is behind the scenes of the basketball courts. They also predict five teams will have significant money to spend in 2009. One I really found interesting was Kobe Bryant, from Lakers. With the Lakers being so close to winning the champions, it was very disappointing to see them lose their title to their opponents. haha Before reading this article, I wouldn't think that Kobe would want to be leaving the Lakers and now I know that it's true! And that Kobe's going to hang around for the ride!

Once again, the main culprit was the dreaded NBA salary cap. Only a few teams -- the Sixers, Clippers, Warriors and Grizzlies -- really had the money to pick up a free agent from another team. One of those teams, Memphis, decided not to spend its money (although they did make a play for Josh Smith) and is going into the season nearly $10 million under the cap.

Kobe will tough it out

Kobe's battered pinkie finger won't get the medical help it needs right now, the Lakers' star player decided, and said that he will join the team as it begins training on September 27. The injury has been lingering since February this year, but Bryant has decided to postpone treatment because he deemed the recovery period required after surgery to be too long. Kobe said that he is looking forward to a great season with the Lakers. And he has reason to be excited. LA Times reported that according to MGM/Mirage Race and Sports Book in Las Vegas, the Lakers are a favorite to win the NBA title, especially now that center Andrew Bynum is ready to play again for the team after an injury last season.

Will it really be the year for the Lakers? I like to think it is. They are more solid at this point than they were before the previous season started. However, I do think that Kobe should be a little less Quixotic and take the necessary precautions before the season starts. If I were him, I would have that surgery now so he would not have to miss out too much. He might not be able to participate significantly in training camp or even in the beginning of the season, but at least he would be healthier for the season.

First Sunday of the 2008 NFL season; Brady Down

In Foxboro, Massachusetts, Tom Brady limped off the Gillette Stadium turf with an injured left knee. Brady's next date won't be with Gisele, but presumably with the working end of a surgeon's scalpel. The Jets and the New England Patriots are both 1-0, but the Jets have a Hall of Fame-to-be quarterback who can still stand upright. Sure, Favre said it will take his banana-bruised body at least three more days "until I feel good again." But that beats the medical possibilities facing Brady and the Patriots. As the "Favre Era -- Jets Version" began here in front of a sellout crowd (sort of; there were empty seats), the "Brady Era -- 2008 Version" ended midway through the first quarter of his game against Kansas City. At the exact moment Brady's knee buckled, Favre and the Jets became the team to beat in a division previously leased by the Patriots. "I just found out," Favre said. "I heard about that. Man, that's terrible. Terrible. I guess it's [an] ACL or something. They've always overcome injuries and things like that, but that's pretty difficult [with] Tom Brady." I don't know who told Favre that Brady had hurt his anterior cruciate ligament, but here's guessing it wasn't Patriots coach Bill Belichick (the team hasn't confirmed a diagnosis; Brady will have an MRI on Monday). You could sever your arm and Belichick would describe the injury as "an abrasion." The guy is the prince of darkness when it comes to specifics on anything, especially injuries. This is a quarterback-driven league, and the best healthy quarterback in the AFC East is now Favre. He didn't put up PlayStation numbers, but he did enough to help beat the Miami Dolphins 20-14. And he did it pretty much without a place-kicker (Mike Nugent strained his thigh during a first-quarter kickoff), without knowing about 25 percent of the Jets' playbook, and without having much of a feel for any of his wide receivers.

He's back

The LA Lakers was obviously a formidable team last season compared to the previous post Shaq and Kobe duo years. But still, they failed to capture the elusive and coveted NBA championship title. Well, I have high hopes that next year will be another good year. For one, Andrew Bynum is finally coming out of the injured list and back in his Lakers jersey. In an article in the LA Times, the young center said, "'Everything's ready to go. I'm 100%.'"

Of course, there is now ay of telling whether Bynum is really ready until he steps back onto the court and it will be interesting to see how he would fit with Pau Gasol in the mix. If maybe Odom would be willing to come off the bench from time to time that should be sweet for LA. The Lakers' bench is deep enough as it is, but they would be better served by having a tall versatile player like Odom in it. Bynum, on the other hand, can do what he has done in the past and provide the ample support Kobe needs to take the team on his back.

Sharing is Caring

The world-wide known American Gold medalists, Michael Phelps won eight gold medals in the Olympic games. The last time someone almost reached that area was in the 1972 Olympics in Munich. In 1972 Mark Spitz won 7 gold medals in the Olympics. Michael Phelps has always been a inspiration to swim athletes though out America. And now since he won 8 gold medals he inspired many more swimmers out there world-wide.

The Swimwear manufacturer Speedo gave Michael a one million dollar check for at least tying the record with the 1972 Olympic 7 gold medalist Spitz. With the $1 million dollar bonus Phelps received he is going to start a foundation.
The first initiative by the Michael Phelps Foundation will be an eight-city tour across the United States during which Phelps will discuss his Olympic experiences with children. Sharing is caring; don't you agree?
