What Are The Saints Thinking?

There’s little doubt that the New York Giants are better off without Jeremy Shockey – great talent, awful team player – but what are the New Orleans Saints thinking? They reportedly gave up a second- and a fifth-round draft pick to obtain Shockey, a tight end who doesn’t like to block. That’s almost like getting a safety who is only willing to make interceptions. The Saints are a team on the rise. They stumbled last season in going 7-9, but under head coach Sean Payton they’re likely to return to the top of the NFC South. The competition in the division from the Panthers, Buccaneers and Falcons is not too daunting. And who knows? Maybe Reggie Bush will do something this year more productive than posing with Kim Kardashian. Tight ends aren’t as plentiful as running backs. But a serviceable tight end is always available. The Saints are not only wasting two valuable draft picks on a loudmouth who thinks “me first,” he also happens to have six seasons of NFL wear and tear on him and is coming off a broken leg.
